Storage infrastructures can either scale:
- Vertically – Adding more storage resources (like storage disks) for the controller to extend its storage capacity as per the need
- Horizontally – Expanding the storage capacity of an already operational node without having to add any additional resources for the requirement at hand
Infrastructures being able to scale on demand are optimal in terms of the operational costs. A few ways to enhance scalability are:
- Investing in storage virtualization technologies. More resilient technologies like the RAID groups can enhance the storage performance in terms of scalability as well as speed.
- Establishing Containerized Infrastrcutures. Containers are known for their real-time scaling capabilities; thus, container-based storage infrastructures can be a good solution as well
- Automated Configuration Management. There are tools available to automate configuration management so that factors like IOPS, data streaming, etc., can be regularized for the storage environments, thus controlling the scalability as per requirement.
