SNIA Storage Developer Conference India 2019: A Panacea Moment for Storage Architects
Special Reportage by MSys Technologies
Bengaluru, India, May 27, 2019 — SNIA Storage Developer Conference (SDC) 2019, once again proved to be the ‘Eldorado’ for storage knowledge seekers. The pleasure of listening to the sharpest brains speaking prominently on various storage domains was prodigious. The genesis of SNIA SDC India in 2016 was subject to a great curiosity, excitement; techies awaited with bated breath. Nothing changed in 2019! Celebrating the fourth anniversary, SNIA SDC 2019 was a panacea moment for storage developers and architects.
SNIA Storage Developer Conference 2019 was conducted on 23-24 May 2019 in Bengaluru, India. The event offered the grandest platform to discuss new age storage technologies’ trends and challenges. This was attested with the participation of some of the biggest Storage names – Dell EMC, Nutanix, RedHat, NetApp, and IBM.
The venue for this year was Hotel Conrad – a plush, ecstatic property nestling just amid this beautiful Metropolitan. The registration desks were the first point of contact on Day 1. The ID cards were in two colors – Green for tech folks and Purple for non-tech folks. This was a wise decision on the part of SNIA SDC India, giving attendees a fair idea of an individual’s expertise.
The two days of passionate learning and fun at SNIA SDC India 2019 were a mix of keynote presentations, product demos, lightning talks, and networking. MSys Technologies (SNIA SDC Supporting Partner) had insightful conversations with storage mavens over the future of the Storage industry.
The event witnessed a total of 36 sessions during a span of two days. Dell EMC, with a total of five sessions, were the heavyweights. IBM and NetApp enlightened audience with four and three sessions, respectively. All the sessions were graspable, presenting novel ideas and cutting-edge trends.
The event kick-started with opening comments from SNIA Board Members, Paul Talbut and Udyan Singh on Day 1 and Day 2. Most of the sessions were divided into Track A and Track B.
Track A for Day 1 and Day 2 covered Cloud and NVMe perspectives, respectively. Track B for Day 1 and Day 2 included Emerging Storage Technologies and Standards and Next Generation Ecosystem Technologies, respectively.
One of the keynote session was delivered by Nidhi Malhotra – Staff Design Engineer at Microchip. Nidhi, in her session, ” Workshop on SNIA Swordfish Tools,” illustrated the audience on SNIA Swordfish tools – Swordfish API Emulator, Swordfish Basic Web Client, Swordfish Sample Dashboard Datadog Integration, and Swordfish Sample Dashboard Power BI Integration.
The SNIA Swordfish™ specification helps to provide a unified approach for the management of storage and servers in hyper scale and cloud infrastructure environments, making it easier for IT administrators to integrate scalable solutions into their data centers.
Per MSys, technologies that were the talk of the event on Day 1 and Day 2 were:
- Kubernetes | Important session – On-premise cloud with a Kubernetes-native infrastructure, Sahina Bose, Manager, Software Engineering, Red Hat
- Computational Storage | Important session – Resource Proportional Storage Processing in the age of Deep Learning, K Gopinath, Professor, Indian Institute of Science
- Deduplication | Important session – Storage tiering with deduplication, Santosh Kalekar, Senior Principal Software Engineer, Veritas Technologies
- Quantum Computing | Important session – Quantum Network of Secrets from India, M T Karunakaran, Head of Products and Technology, QuNu Labs
- NVMe over Fabric | Important session – NVMe over Fabrics – Demystified, Rob Davis, Vice President, Storage Technology, Mellanox
MSys’ Storage Maven, Divyank Shukla’s presented “Recommendation Engine for Data Eviction Policy in Cloud Service Providers.” It was well received by the storage forum.
The one distinguishing feature of this event was their Lightning Talks. It was a novel concept, which was a hit among the attendees. Lightning Talk was an informal, fireside chat, evoking interesting and inspiring stories of attendees at personal and professional fronts.
One attendee narrated her struggle to self-fund her studies until she landed an internship at NetApp. She explained the role of NetApp in financing her further studies and giving her opportunity to learn, earn and grow, simultaneously. Another attendee from RedHat mentioned his love for cycling. He stressed on the fact that cycling helps him maintain his health, contribute to the pollution control, save money, and navigate the famous Bengaluru traffic. He said that he rides a bicycle to office, every day.
SNIA SDC 2019 also distributed the feedback forms to the attendees. As an encouragement, there was a lucky draw contest among the feedback providers. Some lucky folks won exciting gifts.
The SNIA SDC India 2019, as expected, was a fine blend of learning, networking, and fun.
